The reason these virtues came about is because of Benjamin Franklin's autobiography. He mentions in his book that these virtues came to him when he was reading the Holy Bible specifically after reading Philippines 4. Franklin tells the reader that he pondered what truly made a human being happy and meeting moral virtues. He wanted to be the best person he could be for the world this in turn made him a very wise man.
Benjamin Franklin made a list of thirteen virtues: Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Chastity, and Humility. To help understand these thirteen virtues I will explain them in more detail.
Temperance in Franklin's autobiography he associates temperance with drinking and one should not drink as much so that they do not cause trouble. I take this to mean as to have self moderation among yourself and try to moderate so that you can live to the fullest capacity.
Silence is another virtue Franklin talks about in his autobiography. He takes silence as a point to listen to others and be able to be better to understand someone around you. I agree with how Franklin presents this point it is important that one does not make idle conversation but conversation that engages another and enables you to learn more information.
Order, Benjamin Franklin says that people should remain orderly so that you can correctly engage your time among friends and business and to remain organized is to help make life easier.
Resolution is to perform to your fullest ability and to put your mind to something and make sure that it happens.
Frugality means to not to spend as much money on yourself, save it and give some away to charity to make someone else happy which in turn makes you happy.
Sincerity is to be true to your beliefs and not have any hypocrisy from your words to your actions. It is to think kindly about someone and and not to cause any harm to them, physically or mentally.
Justice is to treat others fairly, do no wrong to anyone be fair to all it makes you and others around you respect you along with making you happy.
Moderation is use things to the correct amount and not to waste anything.
Cleanliness is to keep yourself and your belongings clean and pristine.
Tranquility is to remain calm and not be angry at anyone. This is a great way to be happy. It's kinda like yoga.
Chastity, the best way to describe this is to give the exact definition the state or practice of refraining from extramarital, or especially from all, sexual intercourse.
Humility is to be humble to oneself and be kind to others so that you can be happy.
These are all of the virtues Benjamin Franklin talks about in his autobiography, he says that these are the virtues of happiness. If we follow all of these virtues we will achieve happiness
